Chestnut Class Digs Deep into Local History
Chestnut Class (Years 1 and 2) has been fully immersed in a fascinating and significant local
history study this term, focusing on the Somerset Coal Mining Industry that shaped our
community. This hands-on learning has truly brought the past to life!
Their fieldwork included a village history walk which I mentioned in the last newsletter and a
very special walk down the old railway track to the Radstock Museum. This journey, which
passed the site of the historic crash, gave pupils a tangible sense of the path and daily lives
of the miners. Back in school, their creativity has shone through as they actively create their
own commemorative mining sculptures.
This interest in our heritage has been noticed! We are delighted to share that we have been
offered a permanent miners’ silhouette by the Somerset Miners Welfare Trust. This
silhouette will serve as a powerful focal point in our school grounds—a local history marker
and a lasting legacy of this topic. As a core part of our curriculum, this will enhance our
commitment to teaching the children about the people and industries that built our area,
fostering a sense of community and connection for future cohorts.
