At Shoscombe Church School, personal development is an absolute entitlement for every single child. We intentionally design our curriculum, environment, and community partnerships to ensure our pupils thrive as active citizens, confident communicators, and resilient individuals who are exceptionally well-prepared for the wider world.

🌍 Active Citizenship & Environmental Stewardship

Empowering children to become local changemakers.

We actively combat the geographical isolation of our rural context by giving pupils meaningful, real-world platforms to advocate for their local environment and community.

• The Wellow Brook Action Project: This year, personal development and active citizenship were rooted directly in our immediate geography. Pupils became active stewards of their environment, directly targeting key stakeholders—including local farmers, community members, and Wessex Water—to collaboratively strategise on cleaning up the river and reducing pollution levels.
• Democracy in Action (Parliament Week): This environmental focus took centre stage during UK Parliament Week. When our local Member of Parliament visited, our pupils independently presented their pollution data, confidently questioning how the brook can be better protected and exploring how democratic structures hold utility networks accountable.
• Creative Advocacy (Art Week): Environmental stewardship was woven into creative expression during Art Week. Children used physical and visual media to translate environmental data into moving, community-facing artwork, learning how to use the arts as a tool for social influence.

📣 Advanced Oracy & Character Culture

Developing confident, articulate, and resilient voices.

Our journey toward becoming an Oracy Centre of Excellence ensures that verbal communication is utilised as a deliberate tool to build exceptional pupil confidence and independence.

• Trust ‘Speak Out’ & Poetry Slam: Our high-visibility oracy culture extends far beyond the classroom. This year, our children took their environmental passion to the stage, competing in the regional Trust Speak Out Competition and a Poetry Slam. Using powerful spoken word and structured debate, our pupils advocated for water charities and local ecological accountability, amplifying their voices to influence corporate and community stakeholders.
• Values Award Badge Framework: Securely embedded over the past two years, children work towards earning two specific skill badges each academic year within our rolling curriculum programme (including Chef, Musician, STEM, Well-being, and Finance & Careers). Each skills badge is linked to one of our 4 Values; Creativity, Creating Community, Aspiration for All and Responsible Citizens.
• The “Inspiring Everyone to Shine” Badge: This award is presented at the end-of-year leavers’ assembly to one standout pupil per year group, replacing legacy role model awards and reinforcing core character development.

🎨 True Pupil-Led Leadership & Curation

Shifting from staff-directed outcomes to genuine independence.

Building upon our proud legacy of achieving two Artsmark Gold awards, we are currently driving towards the elite Artsmark Platinum standard by handing complete ownership of the arts over to the children.

• Playground Mentorship: Year 6 pupils act as “Creative Directors” and “Ringmasters,” providing systematic mentorship to EYFS and Key Stage 1 cohorts during play times by teaching playground choreography, circus skills, and performance.
• Public Performances: For major public landmarks, including our Year 6 theatre production, Pupil Voice leaders take full ownership and performance themes link directly to global themes such as Rainforest or The Right for Children to Play.

🌱 Adventure, Resilience, & Proactive Support

Removing barriers and teaching children to navigate risk.

We believe that personal development can only happen when children feel safe, supported, and completely included.

• Inclusive Leadership: Inclusion is driven directly from the top, with the Headteacher serving as the SENCO, ensuring that the diverse needs of SEND learners remain central to all core policy, staffing, and resource decisions.
• Targeted Pastoral Care: Our dedicated Pastoral Support Lead focuses explicitly on providing holistic care for vulnerable and disadvantaged families, effectively removing emotional and social barriers to learning.
• Risk Management & Outdoor Learning: Pupils demonstrate an excellent capacity to manage risk through our Double Platinum OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) provision and specialised Forest School.
• Eradicating Financial Exclusion: Thanks to targeted community donations and Pupil Premium funding, our termly curriculum trip programme is heavily subsidised, ensuring 100% equitable access to all off-site learning opportunities.

We believe that personal development, confidence, and resilience are forged when children step outside the comfort zone of the classroom. Our comprehensive outdoor learning, playground frameworks, and two-year rolling residential trip programme are designed to build resilience and independence.
